In the budget segment you'll find two groups: entry-level models from well-known brands (Samsung Galaxy Tab A, Lenovo Tab M, Redmi Pad) and no-name tablets from the Far East with impressive spec sheets. Many cheap tablets advertise huge amounts of RAM. Often this is virtual RAM: part of the internal storage is used as swap space. A listing with “24 GB (6+18)” actually has 6 GB of RAM. Virtual RAM is much slower than real memory. So always compare the physical RAM – 4 GB is the minimum for smooth everyday use, and 6 to 8 GB is comfortable.

It's a similar story with storage claims like “expandable to 1 TB”: this usually refers to the maximum size of an additional microSD card, not the built-in storage.

Branded devices generally offer more reliable updates, better service and more realistic spec sheets. No-name tablets often look stronger on paper but come with weaker chips and rarely get updates. For kids or as a kitchen tablet, a no-name device may be enough; if you want to use the tablet for several years, an entry-level model from a well-known brand is often the better choice. Buy from sellers based in the EU so the statutory warranty applies without hassle.

With cheap tablets, read the product description carefully: which chip is inside, how much real RAM is fitted, and is a charger included? Reviews from other buyers help you judge the battery and display realistically.

Also budget a few euros for a case and possibly a memory card. That way your budget tablet stays in one piece for longer and has room for offline videos.
