Apple splits its iPad range into four lines: the standard iPad as the entry model, the iPad Air as the balanced middle ground, the iPad Pro for demanding creative work and the compact iPad mini. For streaming, browsing, school and video calls, the standard iPad is usually all you need. If you draw a lot with a pen, edit large photo libraries or use the tablet with a keyboard as a laptop replacement, you'll benefit from the faster chip and better displays of the Air and Pro.

Worth knowing when you compare: several generations of the same line are often on sale at the same time. So check the listing title for the year, generation or chip name. An older model at a much lower price can be a good deal – as long as it will still get software updates for a long time.

iPad storage can't be expanded with a memory card, so plan generously from the start. 128 GB is enough if you mainly stream and keep your photos in the cloud. If you download films for offline viewing on trips, install lots of games or work with large project files, 256 GB or more is the safe choice. Paying for the next storage tier at purchase is almost always cheaper than an extra cloud subscription later.

Cellular models have a mobile modem (4G or 5G depending on the generation) and get online on the go with an eSIM or SIM card. That's handy for commuters and field staff, but it costs extra and needs a data plan. If you already use your smartphone as a hotspot, the Wi-Fi-only model is usually the cheaper option.

Alongside regular new stock, you'll also see listings marked “New: other”, “open box” or “differenzbesteuert” (margin scheme). Open-box devices have usually just been unpacked or briefly demonstrated, are technically as good as new and often a little cheaper. If in doubt, ask whether the manufacturer's warranty runs from your purchase date and whether the device has already been activated. With any listing from a business seller, you get the two-year statutory warranty that applies in Germany and the EU.
