The iPad Pro is Apple's most powerful tablet – popular with illustrators, photographers and anyone who uses an iPad as a work device. Here you'll find current and older generations compared.
What sets the iPad Pro apart
Apple usually gives the Pro the newest chips and the best displays first. Typical features include a high refresh rate (ProMotion), very bright, high-contrast panels, fast USB-C ports with Thunderbolt support and four-speaker audio. On top of that come camera features such as LiDAR for AR apps.
Who is the extra cost worth it for? If you draw professionally, edit high-resolution video or work on large RAW photos, you'll make full use of the advantages. For series, browsing and email, on the other hand, a Pro is overkill.
Understanding generations and sizes
The size names have changed over the years: early models came in 10.5 and 12.9 inches, later ones in 11 and 12.9 inches, and the latest in around 11 and 13 inches. The generation is often given as a number in the listing (e.g. “4th gen”) or can be worked out from the year and chip. Used Pro models from recent years are an interesting route to lots of power – in everyday use an older Pro often outperforms a new entry-level iPad.
- Large displays use more energy – battery life is still usually enough for a full day.
- You can spot Cellular versions by “Wi-Fi + Cellular”, “4G” or “5G” in the title.
- Keyboard and Pencil are generation-specific – when buying used with accessories, make sure the models match.
Tips for buying a used iPad Pro
Check the screen for pressure marks and dead pixels, ask about the battery capacity and get confirmation that Find My has been turned off and the device removed from the previous owner's Apple Account. With expensive Pro models, dealer listings with a statutory warranty are particularly recommended.
Storage and RAM on the Pro
On the iPad Pro, the amount of RAM partly depends on the storage tier you choose: on some generations, the largest storage options come with more RAM. That can matter for professionals with big projects, but the base versions are enough for most users. Check the spec sheet if that extra headroom is important to you.
