A refurbished iPad often saves you a lot of money compared with a new one and saves resources too. Here you'll find iPads explicitly sold as refurbished.

What “refurbished” means

Refurbished devices are used or returned tablets that a dealer has tested, cleaned, repaired if necessary and reset. The term isn't legally protected – how thoroughly devices are checked depends on the seller. Reputable dealers state a condition grade (such as “Excellent”, “Very good” or “Good”), describe visible signs of wear and give information about the battery.

Important: when you buy from a business seller in Germany, you also have a statutory warranty claim on used goods. For used items, dealers may shorten it to one year if they clearly agree this with you beforehand. Many refurbishers also offer their own additional guarantee.

Choosing the right generation

Many cheap refurbished deals are for older iPads with a 9.7 or 10.2-inch display. For streaming, kids, recipes in the kitchen or as a second device, they're an affordable solution. But bear in mind: very old generations no longer get new iPadOS versions, and some apps will eventually require a newer system version. The newer the generation, the longer you'll probably be able to use the device safely.

  • Check the condition grade and photos – “Good” often means visible scratches.
  • Ask about battery capacity; a replaced battery is a plus.
  • Check what's in the box: are a cable and charger included?
  • Storage: 32 GB is very tight today; 64 GB and up makes more sense.

Refurbished, used or new?

Compared with buying used from a private seller, refurbished gives you more security thanks to testing and a statutory warranty. Compared with new, you often save a big chunk of the price. But always compare with the current entry-level iPad: if the gap is small, a new device with the full update outlook is often the better choice.

How to read refurbished listings

Many listings give the year, screen size and storage in the title, for example “2020, 10.2 inch, 32 GB”. The year helps you place the generation. Also look out for additions such as “Wi-Fi + Cellular” or “Entriegelt” (unlocked): the latter means there's no network SIM lock. Compare several condition grades of the same model – the price difference between “Good” and “Very good” is often small.
