Samsung is the biggest Android tablet maker. Here you can compare Galaxy Tab models from the affordable Tab A to the premium Tab S – new and used.

The Galaxy Tab lines at a glance

The Galaxy Tab A series is Samsung's entry level: solid displays, decent batteries and enough power for streaming, browsing and learning apps. The Galaxy Tab S series is the premium line with better displays (AMOLED on many models), faster chips and – on many models – an S Pen in the box. In between sit the FE and Lite models, which offer premium features at lower prices. The Tab Active models are rugged devices for building sites, warehouses and field work.

S Pen, DeX and software

The S Pen works without a battery or with a small one (depending on the model) and is great for notes and sketches. Whether a pen is included or supported varies by model – check the spec sheet. With Samsung DeX, many Tab S models give you a desktop-style interface with windows, which makes productive work with a keyboard cover easier.

Samsung has extended its update promises in recent years. In addition, tablets newly placed on the EU market since 20 June 2025 fall under the Ecodesign Regulation, which includes update obligations. Older used models, on the other hand, may already be out of support.

  • Tab A: streaming, kids, kitchen, second device.
  • Tab S FE/Lite: a good middle ground with pen support.
  • Tab S: premium display, lots of power, ideal for creatives.
  • Tab Active: shockproof, water-resistant, replaceable battery on some models.

Buying used: what you should check

With older Tab A models, it's worth checking the Android version – very old devices run outdated systems on which not every app will start. Also check that the tablet has been removed from the previous owner's Google account (Factory Reset Protection), and with LTE models ask about a SIM lock.

Understanding model numbers

Samsung labels its tablets with model numbers such as SM-X205 or SM-P619. These help you identify the generation, size and features precisely, because names like “Tab A” have been used for many years. If in doubt, look up the model number online before buying an older used device.

New models are safest bought from dealers selling German or EU stock. With imported devices, language packs, chargers or warranty handling may differ – only worth it if the price advantage is significant.
